After the Breaking:
And so, the end of the world came to pass. She had met Tim Hunter years ago, when he was still a mere child. John Constantine had introduced him to her, left him in her care for a few brief hours. She had taken him to a party, introduced him around to a number of magical sorts and shown him what fun it all was. Like the Trenchcoat Brigade, Zatanna thought he'd turn out just fine. How very wrong they were.
The weeks leading up to The Breaking were hard, but Zatanna and John Constantine pooled their resources, fought bravely, made no difference. The armies of The Hunter were endless, pulled from the hells of a thousand worlds. In the end, it came down to Hunter and the Spectre himself, two god-like beings locked in primal hand-to-hand battle to the death. The two flew up into the sky, becoming small black dots against the sun before disappearing altogether. She had just enough time to put up a protective barrier around herself and Constantine. And then... the world exploded.
Or rather, it seemed that way. As the sun grew exponentially to its new, scorching size, everyone was temporarily blinded. When Zatanna regained her sight, she half-wished she hadn't. Bodies lay, mangled and torn, like a churning sea of limbs. Her vision spotted, she stumbled across them to find shelter. That's when she found Constantine. At first, she thought he was dead - but the pained moan he gave told her otherwise. John! Somehow, some way, she got him up off the ground and took him with her. She met up with a few other survivors and as the new brillant sun slowly set, they hunkered down in the sub-basement of some building, waiting out the night and the demon creatures that came with it.
She and a Green Lantern spent the first part of the night trying to tend to the wounded, trying to save John Constantine's life. His injuries were extensive, but Zatanna was, after all, a magician.
And then, the floods came. It was the Lantern that saved them; he encased their pitiful, broken group in a green bubble and they rode the currents out of the city, until the waters receded. Many theories were offered - some thought it was a tidal wave from Hunter or Specter (or both) crashing back to Earth. Others thought an earthquake displacing massive amounts of water. A scientist in their midst, in a whisper of defeat and disbelief, said that it must have been the polar ice caps melting. God help us all.
As the waters receded, the little party of survivors were surprised to find harned that. They had witnessed Superman destroying vast swaths of military forces trying to stop him. Some had tried to help stop him. They no longer lived. Then as they traveled east, the bands of demons had caught their trail. Some tried to stand and fight them. They no longer lived. As the days drug on, the stark new reality was unavoidable. There was no longer a government. There was no longer order. The demons and black magic moved freely all over. The Justice League was gone, large numbers of heroes dead, armies consumed in the final battle. And the planet was dying. Each day the sun continued to burn, so much larger now in the sky. Waters were drying up all over. Grass was turning a sickly brown everywhere they walked. And still no sign of any working machine, forcing them to walk. And walk they did. They walked through demons and vampires, and then later bands of normal men driven wild by chaos and growing starvation. Eventually the group that had set out with him east was picked off one by one. In the end it was just Zatanna and John.
Eventually they made it to the East Coast, and to the small community that Batman had begun rebuilding. John had harbored some wild scheme involving trying to get back to England, back to the mother country and that nexus of old, ancient magic to see what still existed, if anything. As he outlined his plan to leave, Zatanna was surprised by the intensity of her reaction. John had come and gone in her life for years and never before had she so desperately wanted him to stay. But times had changed; the world had changed. Zatanna had never needed John like she needed him now. Despite meeting up Batman and the others on the East Coast, without John, Zatanna felt utterly and horrifyingly alone. She tried not to let this show, but John must have guessed, for one day his plans to go to England suddenly changed and he chose to stay stateside, declaring that they wouldn't survive a minute without his first-rate warlock skills. But in his eyes, Zatanna had seen the truth. He stayed for her.
The years the followed were hard and unyielding. Zatanna and John stayed and helped protect the East Coast colonies, but frequently they ventured out into the harsh, desolate world - scavenging what they could, investigating rumors of hope and life, seeking a cure to the taint that magic now bore. Often they went together - investigating paranormal threats, abolishing those they could and surviving those they could not. Sometimes, necessity forced them to split up and journey separately. These were the worst times for Zatanna. She understood the importance of what they were doing, the significance of rebuilding society, of saving mankind. But mostly she just struggled to survive alongside the man who had become her world entire.
