Since The Breaking, magic has changed. That event marked the end of one magical age and the beginning of the next.
Darkness rules at the dawn of this new age and black magic has grown in power, tainting everything. All magic-users feel the blackness that soils and twists magic; spells sometimes produce bizarre results, talismans and artifacts have changed from their original use, wards and curses pulse with unpredictability.
In the last age, magic had grown old, diminished by logic and science. But now, it is young again, thriving with the wild purity that had been seen in the age before Man, the Age of Fae. Those who use magic have had to nearly relearn their craft. Learn the new rules and pathways that magic now follows. And learn to live with the darkness that touches it all, for black magic rules the dawn of this new age.
But, ages grow and evolve. Atlantis stood at the dawn of the last age, ripe with magic, and by the end, man had explored the moon and traveled the stars with science. Therefore, the Dark magic need not rule supreme for the whole era and some now struggle to find a way to control this new, wild magic… and turn it once more to Light and Good.
Roleplay Notes: Since magic is "weird" now, magical characters should experience slight difficulties with using magic, and struggle with its power and the blackness that is tainting it.
